The $39.99 Wyze Bird Feeder is just a housing. Here's the true cost.
At $39.99 the Wyze Bird Feeder looks like the cheapest smart feeder on the market by a mile. It isn't a smart feeder. It's a plastic seed housing with a camera mount — the camera is sold separately, and the AI bird detection lives in a paid plan. None of that makes it a bad buy. It makes it a different product than the price tag suggests, and the math below is what the listing doesn't show you.
What $39.99 actually buys
The feeder itself: seed reservoir, perch, weather cover, and a slot that a compatible Wyze camera clips into. That's the whole product. (It's also the sale price — Wyze lists it at $49.99.) On its own it records nothing, detects nothing, and identifies nothing, because there's no camera in the box.
Which cameras fit — including the one that doesn't
Wyze's official compatibility list, as of June 9, 2026: Cam v3, Cam v3 Pro, Cam v4, Battery Cam Pro, and Cam Outdoor v1/v2. Two footnotes that bite people:
- Any non-battery camera needs Wyze's Outdoor Power Adapter to live outside on the feeder — Wyze's page scopes that to every wired cam on the list (v3, v3 Pro, v4), not just one model. It's another line item if you buy à la carte; the official Cam v4 bundle includes it.
- The budget Cam OG is not on the official list, despite earlier listings suggesting it would work. If your plan was "cheap feeder + cheapest Wyze cam," the official compatibility page says no.
What's free and what needs Cam Plus
Here's where Wyze draws the free-vs-paid line:
- Free, forever: live view, basic motion alerts, and local recording to a microSD card — continuous or event-based. No cloud account fee required to watch your feeder live or review footage off the card. For contrast: Bird Buddy and FeatherSnap — two of the category's best-known names — offer no local-card option at all.
- Paid (Cam Plus, $2.99/mo or $29.99/yr per camera): cloud event video, longer event clips, and AI detections — Wyze promotes bird detection with its paid camera plans on the feeder and bundle pages. On pricing history: the annual plan rose from $19.99 to $29.99 in March 2026; the monthly price was already $2.99 (up from $1.99 in an earlier, undated increase) and didn't change then.
One honest caveat on the AI itself: Wyze's bird detection is a security camera's AI that learned to recognize "bird." It tells you a bird visited; identifying which species is not what it's built for — that's the whole product of the dedicated brands (Birdfy and Bird Buddy claim thousands of species; see the full guide).
The all-in math
Wyze's own bundles are the honest anchor for what this product costs a person who doesn't already own a compatible camera (bundle prices from wyze.com, June 9, 2026):
| Setup | Upfront | With bird detection, 3 years |
|---|---|---|
| Feeder only (you own a compatible cam) | $39.99 | ~$130 ($39.99 + 3 yr of Cam Plus annual) |
| Feeder + Cam v4 bundle (plug-in) | $89.98 | ~$180 |
| Feeder + Battery Cam Pro + solar bundle (out of stock when checked) | $118.98 | ~$209 |
Three-year figures are our arithmetic: upfront price plus three years of Cam Plus at $29.99/yr. Skip Cam Plus and the right column collapses to the upfront price — you keep live view and microSD recording, you lose AI detection and cloud clips. One more honesty pass on those upfront figures: all three are Wyze's sale prices (regular prices on the same pages when we checked: $49.99 feeder, $105.95 v4 bundle, $164.94 battery bundle), Wyze rotates sales constantly, and the battery bundle was listed out of stock on the day we checked — treat it as a price point, not a buy-it-now link.
That lands the realistic Wyze setup at $90–$119 upfront plus ~$30/yr for the smart features. Over three years that's $180–$209 — within sight of the Birdfy Feeder 2 Pro at $239.99 (itself a sale price; list $319.99), which is sold with lifetime species ID (6,000+ species) included, no meter running — though that brand has its own SKU trap, and you should confirm the AI label on the exact listing: see the Birdfy lifetime-vs-subscription guide. At today's sale prices the Wyze routes are cheaper at year three; depending on which sales are running, the battery-bundle route can land above the Pro — and either way you're buying security-cam detection, not species identification.
When the Wyze route genuinely wins
- You already own a compatible Wyze cam. Then $39.99 really is the cheapest entry into camera feeding we track, and the free local recording means you can trial the hobby with no recurring fee at all.
- You want a security camera that moonlights as a feeder cam, not a birding appliance. The camera detaches and goes back to watching your porch.
- You're already paying for Cam Plus on that camera — bird detection comes along at no extra cost.
If none of those describe you and species identification is the point, a dedicated feeder with included AI is usually the better spend — the full comparison lines them all up.
How we verify pricing and terms is on the methodology page. Prices change constantly — confirm on Wyze's product page before buying.
Frequently asked questions
Does the $39.99 Wyze Bird Feeder include a camera?
No. The Wyze Bird Feeder is a seed housing with a camera mount — the camera is sold separately. You need a compatible Wyze cam for it to function as a camera feeder at all.
Which Wyze cameras work with the Bird Feeder?
Wyze’s official compatibility list: Cam v3, Cam v3 Pro, Cam v4, Battery Cam Pro, and Cam Outdoor v1/v2. Per Wyze’s page, any non-battery camera (v3, v3 Pro, v4) also needs the Outdoor Power Adapter, sold separately — the official Cam v4 bundle includes it. The budget Cam OG is not on the official list, despite earlier suggestions it would work.
Do you need Cam Plus for the Wyze Bird Feeder?
For AI bird detection, yes — that sits in the Cam Plus plan ($2.99/month or $29.99/year, per camera). Without it you still get live view, basic motion alerts, and free local recording to microSD.
What does the Wyze Bird Feeder really cost?
If you don’t already own a compatible camera, Wyze’s own bundles are the anchor: $89.98 (feeder + Cam v4 plug-in, Outdoor Power Adapter included) or $118.98 (feeder + Battery Cam Pro + solar panel) — both sale prices, and the battery bundle was out of stock when we checked. Add Cam Plus at $2.99/month or $29.99/year if you want bird detection.
